What do insurance umpires do?

In Colorado, insurance umpires are specialists that act as neutral umpires between two claim appraisers that are failing to negotiate. Colorado umpires are often independent insurance claims appraisers, insurance attorneys, or independent public insurance adjusters that have the insurance background required to examine the disagreed upon claim.

For example, if you live in Colorado and feel an insurance settlement offer is not accurate, you might hire your own insurance appraiser. What happens when the two insurance estimators' quotes are severely different? They might be able to bargain for a decent agreement. But if the insurance appraisers can't, then that's where an umpire comes in.

While the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies Division of Insurance controls insurers and adjusters, insurance umpires are not typically licensed in any state. While specific umpire licensing is not required by Colorado, most umpires hold other qualified credentials. For example, if the umpire is also a public insurance adjuster, then he has met Colorado's insurance regulations for his primary profession. Likewise, insurance attorneys must sustain their attorney's licenses.
