What are insurance umpires?

In Illinois, umpires are professionals that act as impartial referees between two insurance appraisers that are deadlocked. Illinois umpires are often independent insurance estimators, insurance attorneys, or public insurance adjusters that have the insurance calculations background necessary to evaluate the dubious claim.

For example, if you live in Illinois and feel that an insurance estimate is off base, you might hire your own insurance estimator. However, what if the two insurance estimators' approximations are significantly different? They may be able to bargain for a decent agreement. But if the insurance claims appraisers can't, then that's where an umpire comes into play. While the Illinois Division of Insurance governs insurance carriers, umpires are not usually licensed in any state. While particular

umpire licensing is not required by Illinois, most umpires hold related licenses or certificates and credentials. For example, insurance attorneys must sustain their licenses for practicing law. Likewise, if the umpire is also a public adjuster, then he has met Illinois's insurance rules for his primary profession.
